Winchester Speedway - August 30th

Allen Brannon came into Saturday night9 9s event the SMART Tour points leader, but was looking to take the win at his home track of Winchester, after having come one position short in SMART's first visit to this track.

He looked strong from the beginning, setting a new track record for Semi-Lates at Winchester Speedway in time trials before the rains hit. When the feature took green at just shy of 12:30 Sunday morning, Allen Brannon had the pole and took the lead over Gerald Davis.

And the pressure was on as Davis worked all over the rear end of the lead Brannon machine. Behind the lead pair was SMART regular Jared Almarode, who spent the entire race chasing down the dominant duo.

Much as in the first SMART tour race here, Davis and Brannon put on a racing clinic. But Brannon held the edge throughout by the narrowest of margins, Davis would try to take the lead with a few to go but the two would make contact and Davis would fall several carlengths behind allowing Brannon clear sailing to the victory, Brannon's second on the SMART tour, and fifth this season at Winchester Speedway.

Following the lead pair was Almarode in third, Brad Ritter, and Winchester points leader Brian Buckler would round out the top five.

Lear Over Davis in S.M.A.R.T Series Thriller at Potomac”

By Doug Watson

Budds Creek, MD- Severn Maryland’s Kyle Lear continued his late season heroics as
he scored his third-straight late model feature win in last Friday night’s
40-lap SMART Series event at Potomac speedway Courtesy of: Vera's Beach Club Restaurant & Marina, Three Mules Welding Supply's and Cameron Construction.

Derrick Quade and Allan Brannon brought the 26-car starting field down to the
initial waving of the green flag. Brannon blasted into the race lead from his second
starting spot and appeared to have the car to beat as he led the events first 24
circuits. While Brannon was leading, third starting Kyle Lear made his way to second
by the 4th lap. Unfortunately Brannon’s brilliant run came to a halt as mechanical
problems ended his night while leading on the 24th lap. Lear was in the right place
at the right time as he would be scored the leader on lap-25. Even though Lear would
eventually score the win, things got quite interesting behind him.

Jamie Lathroum, who spun earlier in the event and was forced to the rear, was on the
move. Lathroum charged through the field to enter the top-five by the 25th lap.
Lathroum then took the lead from Lear on lap-36. However, Lathroum’s chance at a
dramatic victory came to an end as he spun while leading on lap-38. Once again Kyle
Lear was in the right place as he held off the advances of Gerald Davis, who also
came from the rear, to post the biggest win of his career and his sixth overall win
of 2008.

“Allen (Brannon) had a really good car and I’m not sure if we would have been able to
get by him.” An elated Kyle Lear stated from Potomac’s victory lane. “We had a
good starting spot tonight and I’m glad we were able to win it, this is really big
for us.” Nineteenth -starting Greg Roberson was third, Ed Pope drove a great race
for fourth and Ronald Cusic completed the top-five. Heats for the stellar 31-car
field went to Brannon, Lear, Quade and Gerald Davis with Tommy Wagner Jr. winning
the consolation.

County Line Raceway - June 14, 2008

The Steelblock Mid-Atlantic Racing Tour unleashed it’s warriors on the 3/8 mile clay oval, County Line Raceway, Saturday night. The action started early as the track was extra wet for practice sessions. The 02 of Damon Kotke and the 28 of Gerald Davis both experienced the outside wall in turn 2. Both teams would work hard to get their cars back together in time to complete qualifying. Fourteen of the most daring Late Models took to the track for 40 laps. To the delight of the crowded grandstand it was "Wild Child" Britches Liles of Bailey starting from the pole position turning in a time of 16.52 seconds on the fast track. Liles claimed the $100 pole money and trophy given by Stephens Lawn Care. Outside the front row was the series regular Allan Brannon of Winchester, VA with a time of 16.70. At the wave of the green it was "Hammer" Brannon to the point followed in hot pursuit by Liles. The first yellow waved on lap four with a 3 car pile up including cars #13 Jimmy Richards, of Winchester, Va, #95 Mitch Miller, of Winchester,VA and #99 Chris Klein of Franklinton, NC. On the restart of lap 11, "Hammer" Brannon lost it coming off turn 4 and Liles was there with no where to go. S.M.A.R.T. officials asked Brannon if Liles had helped turn him around. Brannon’s response had been no, he lost it on his on. It was then Liles to checkered flag for the win but not without some serious challenges from "The Viper" Spencer Liggon who would be forced to settle for second place honors. It was the best run of the season for Liggon. Liggon stated after the race that lap traffic got in his way. It was good race. Liles said, " Me and Spencer run well together. Liles wanted to thank Brannon for a good run, all his crew, Robert Corbett for getting him to the race track, sponsors Creekside Lawn Maintenance, and Battleboro Produce. Third place was taken by Louis Timberlake from Mechanisville, Va. despite taking a wild ride in turn 2 when his racer climbed the wall and kept on going. Fourth place went to Ronnie Boykin of Wilson. Boykin was given the S.M.A.R.T. Hard Charger award after coming from a last place start as well as S.M.A.R.T regular Jimmy Richards. Rounding out the top 5 finishers was Derick Quade of Mechanicsville, MD.

Other notable runs were from #19 Jared Almarode with a strong run finishing in sixth position. The young driver from Lyndhurst, Virginia showed his ability to wheel a racecar in only his sophmore year in Late models. Watch for good things from this driver. The F13 of Jimmy Richards was more than work, as he battled for the entire race progressing forward. After the race, his ability was evident as he finished the race with a broken front frame section. Now that's using all of your car! The 01 of Petie Coffey made his S.M.A.R.T debut on a track like he has never seen before. Coffey progressed throughout the evening bettering his style and positions until giving in to tire problems. Great job by all of our S.M.A.R.T regulars!

Elkins Motor Speedway - May 30th, 2008

Kerens, WV. 5/30/2008

Allen Brannon, from Winchester, VA, passed race long leader Greg Roberson on lap 32 and led the final 9 laps to win the Steel Block Mid Atlantic Racing Tour (S.M.A.R.T.) Series opener at the Elkins Speedway. Roberson and John Tallman led the 23 car field to the green with eventual winner Brannon back in 7th .

At the drop of the green Tallman powered around Roberson in turns 1 & 2 and led going down the back straight but a spin by Jimmy Richards stopped his good run requiring a complete restart. On the next start Tallman again got another real good run on the top thru 1 & 2 and led the first lap with Roberson 2nd , Chad Green 3rd , Freddie Carpenter 4 th and Anthony Arbogast 5 th .

Brannon was 8th . On lap 2 Roberson who was working the middle of the track got by Tallman for the lead. The next lap the 2nd caution flew slowing the field when Don Woodruff looped it. At this point the lineup was Roberson, Tallman, Green, Carpenter, Arbogast, Billy Brown, Brannon, Jared Almarode, Bubby Dillman, Derick Quade, Kris Southern, Tom Harris, Spencer Liggon, Kevin Keene, John Reedy, Brad Harris, Louis Timberlake, C.J. Brown, Ted Kehrer, Joe Clutter, Mitch Miller, Richards, and Woodruff.

When the green flew Roberson immediately opened up a 6 to 8 car length lead over Tallman who had a 2 to 4 car length lead over Green with the rest of the field behind. The only mover in the top ten was Brannon who on lap 7 got by Brown and then the next lap Carpenter for 5th .

Then on lap 9 Joe Clutter who was at the tail of the field spun and brought out a caution. On this caution Arbogast went to the pits. This moved Brannon to 4 th . During this green flag period Carpenter who had slipped back to 6th slid off the top of turn 1 & 2 on lap 12 and dropped back to 12th .

This time when the green flew Brannon was all over the tail of Green who was pressuring Tallman with Roberson maintaining his 6 to 8 car length lead. Ninth place Kris Southern stopped in turn 4 on lap 16 bringing out caution #5 and stopping this battle for 2 nd . On the restart Brannon again motored off while Green dove under Tallman going into 1 with Brannon on Tallman's rear bumper.

These three raced this close until lap 20 when Brannon passed both Green and Tallman in turn's 1 & 2 and took over 2 nd . He immediately began closing the gap to Roberson. He got up behind Roberson and dove under him in turn 1 & 2 and looked to have him passed when a caution flew on lap 22.

At this point Roberson led Brannon, Tallman, Green, Almarode, Quade, Dillman, Carpenter, Brad Harris and Reedy. Roberson took off at this green but had Brannon glued to his rear bumper with Tallman and Green now battling for 3 rd and 4 th with Quade nipping at their heels. On lap 31 a wisp of smoke appeared to come from the rear of Roberson's car going down the front straight.

Then coming through turns 3 & 4 on lap 32 Roberson slowed with a flat right rear. He stopped on the front straight and went pitside, returned but was 1 lap down. Brannon now led Tallman, Quade, Green, Carpenter, Almarode, Reedy, Liggon, Timberlake and Keene. The race ran caution free for the last 9 laps.

During this period Quade got by Tallman for 2nd on the last lap while Carpenter got by Green for 4 th on lap 35. The big loser in the final laps looked to be Bubby Dillman as he was running in the top 10 with 12 laps to go and ended up a lap down in 16th spot at the finish.

At the checkered Brannon led Quade, Tallman, Carpenter, Green, Almarode, Timberlake, Reedy, Liggon and Keene. Heats to Roberson, Tom Harris, Carpenter and Green.

Notes: 23 cars from 4 states (MD, NC, VA, WV) in the pits with all 23 starting the feature. 15 cars running after 40 laps. 10 cautions slowed the action. Hard charger was Ted Kehrer who started 23 rd and finished 11th , a gain of 12 spots.
